Week 2 Body Comp results and Thoughts on Unsolicited Advice

We wrap up week 2 down 2 pounds from last Saturday. After the up and down of the week, I am glad to see that.

I’m feeling pretty good about what’s happening. The workouts are getting easier, though that probably means that I need to start pushing myself harder. A lot of people don’t realize that after about 2 weeks your body starts adapting to whatever you’re doing and you have to change it at that point.

And this brings me to my point of the day. And before I make this point let me say that this is aimed at about 10% of responses. And I’m doing it because I know that there are people that read this blog, and are on a similar Journey, that maybe aren’t as thick-skinned as I am and maybe don’t have the capacity to tell someone to go piss up a rope like I do.

There is a MASSIVE difference between being supportive of someone and being a Mr. Know-it-all.

Here’s a handy guide :

  • Good : “You rock, man! Keep it up!”
  • Bad: “Maybe you shouldn’t focus cardio so much”
  • Good “Dude. You’re Killin it!”
  • Bad: “Why are you worrying about you carbs. That does not matter.”
  • Good: “You’re an inspiration. Keep going!”
  • Bad: “Here’s my YouTube video about what you should be doing”

See the difference?

Here’s the thing. For 10 years I owned two gyms. I was in fantastic  shape. I was a certified Master fitness instructor. I was and still am a certified boxing coach, MMA striking coach, and self-defense instructor.

So not only do I know what I’m doing but I also know what works best for me because after all I’m the one inside this body. I’m the one that knows how my body reacts what my DNA is like and what my habits are like. No one knows me as well as I know me especially not some clown on the interwebs

So what happened? Even the highly experienced in the highly educated can fall. And I fell. I fell pretty hard.

I know what needs to be done. And even though I know what needs to be done if I do need advice, I’m going to reach out to people smarter than me and ask for advice. Unsolicited advice is not helpful. All it does is tell the person on the receiving end that you believe you know more than they do. And it diminishes their accomplishments in the first place.

It is the equivalent of being a “but actually guy.”

So while I appreciate the fact that most of the time it’s probably well-meaning, it’s still not needed. If you have someone in your life that is on a similar Journey. Maybe they are trying to stop drinking. Maybe they are trying to get their diet fixed. Maybe they’re having health problems and they’re using exercise as a way to get control of their Health and Welfare. Or maybe they’re just tired of sitting around and they’re trying to better themselves. What you need to be is their cheerleader. They don’t need an instructor. If they did they would ask.

So even though you may not agree with whatever you see that I’m doing that you wouldn’t do, please keep it to yourself unless I ask.

I’m not sure what it is about these blog post or my Twitter feed that makes you think I need your help. What I need and what everyone that is struggling to get through something needs, is support.

And for all of those of you that have been unbelievably supportive, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And for those of you that think I want your links to your YouTube videos where you’re spouting your stupid fucking theories or your radical diets please let me state that I am not only not interested, but I am offended every time I get one of those emails or DM’s.

Sorry for the negativity today. I had a couple of emails that rubbed me the wrong way this morning and I’m just not having it. I hope this blog is inspiring you a little bit. I know it is keeping me accountable which is why I started it in the first place. Have a great weekend.

Peace
